The Psychological Impact of Diabetes: What Every Clinician Should Know

Diabetes affects more than twenty million people in the United States, or approximately 7% of the national population. According to recent U.S. statistics, more than 18% of people over age 60, or 6.3 million Americans, have diabetes. This course details the association between diabetes and several common mental health conditions. In addition to the elevated prevalence of certain mental health conditions among people with diabetes, clinicians will be informed about how mental health conditions can affect the course of diabetes and impact medical outcomes. Practical theory- and evidence-based psychological interventions  and strategies that can be easily adopted into clinical practice to improve mental health and medical outcomes for people with diabetes are discussed.
